Dive Training Type: Open Water Dive

Training Topic/Description: Open water dive Lake Michigan. Streamlining interoperability with rescue swimmers and divers. Scenario based training led by Retired Gurnee FD Battalion Chief Jim Pellitteri. Boat and Wave runners will be used in accordance with scenario. Surface supplied will be available.
Training Objectives: 1. Explain surf makeup, wave makeup , and wave types as they relate to surf rescue and emergency self rescue in the hazard environment.
2. Verbalize user population and hazards found around beach areas and ways to mitigate them.
3. Explain the formation and hazards of RIP currents.
4. Describe several types of non motorized watercraft available for surf rescue; answer and use them to affect surf rescue.
Rescue swimmer will perform Go Rescues…
5. Describe advanced swimming techniques for navigating the surf zone.
6. Describe possible victim behavior in the surf zone.
7. Verbalize and explain different types of swim, flotation, and rescue tools.
8. Explain the free dive technique used to retrieve a submerged victim.
9. Describe a personal watercraft and toe sled evolution used in surf rescue.
10. Rescue Swimmers will perform rescues for conscious and unconscious victims…
11. Rescue swimmers will perform deep dives for potential victims beneath the surf…
12. Wave Runners will be used for rescue scenarios deploying rescue swimmers to retrieve conscious victims…
13. Rescue Swimmer search lines will be performed for effective search until dive team can deploy…
14. Incident command system shall be utilized. all positions within the ICS will be activated to support the scenario…
15. Dive Team Operations will be activated and used in rescue and potentially in recovery mode…
16. Safety will be high priority for all participants to act as individuals with a safe mind set…
