Swiftwater Training Type: Team Training/Drill
Training Topic/Description: Swiftwater rescue techniques and boat operator techniques
Training Objectives:
1. High-line rigging-(On-shore) In teams of 3, rescuers will set-up and break down high-lines at skill stations on shore. Each will rotate position, attempting different configurations of MA systems.
2. In-Water Ops Participants will perform safety floats, ferry angles, defensive, and offensive swims in and out of eddy’s along the course, if any are present, and avoiding strainers.
3. Shore-based & Go Rescues Rescuers will rotate through performing throw bag rescues and doing tethered and un-tethered go-rescues. Rotate through as rescuer and victim.
4. Static V-lowers Participants will be lowered on a V-line, connected by their tether, and held static in current. At the person on-line’s discretion, they will pull their ripcord and release their tether and float free.
5. High-Line Across the River Crews will set up a high-line using techniques practiced earlier.
6. Inflatable Boat Deployment Crews will set up a boat rescue operation on the high-line with on-shore control of the boat.
7. Live-Bait Boat Rescues Rescuers will rotate through picking off victims floating down river from the boat using whistle blows and hand/oar signals to place boat in the position to pull a victim into the boat. After completing a rescue, one of the 2 boat crew will jump out and become a victim.
8. Boat Operator Training Non boat operator participants will have time, under supervision of qualified watercraft technicians to familiarize themselves and gain proficiency operating a boat in a river/flood environment. Larger topics include: operation of the motor, basic maneuvering of the craft, holding station, launching, and beaching the craft for search operations on land.
